Shadowban on a CBD account: what it means and what to do

Shadowban is not a term Meta uses, and there is no setting that turns it on. What people describe by the word is real enough: reach collapses, the account keeps working, and nothing explains why. On hemp accounts it is usually the accumulation of small policy problems rather than one event.

What the word covers

Instagram limits distribution in several ways that look identical from the inside: a post stops appearing under its hashtags, an account stops being recommended to non followers, or specific content is held back from the explore surface. None of them produce a notification.

Meta does publish that accounts posting content which does not meet recommendation guidelines can stop being recommended. That is the mechanism behind most of what gets called a shadowban, and it is worth reading in the platform's own words rather than in a summary.

Telling a real drop from a normal one

Reach moves all the time. Before assuming a penalty, rule out the ordinary explanations.

  1. Compare like with like. A carousel and a single image do not get the same reach on the same account.
  2. Look at the split between followers and non followers. A penalty usually shows as non follower reach going to almost nothing while follower reach holds.
  3. Check whether it started on a specific date. A gradual slide over two months is usually the account, not a penalty.
  4. Ask someone who does not follow you to search a hashtag you used and look for the post.
Account insights show reach from followers and non followers separately. That one number answers most of the question, and it is the first place to look.

The usual causes on hemp accounts

  • Wording that reads as a medical promise, including in comment replies where nobody audits it.
  • Restricted hashtags, often inherited from a copied tag block.
  • Selling behaviour that belongs on a website: prices, discount codes, taking orders in direct messages.
  • Repeated reposts of the same asset, or content reposted from another account without changes.
  • Bought followers or engagement pods, which are detectable and stay detectable.

The first three are the ones that dominate. Their guides are health claims, hashtags, and compliance in general.

The order to work through it

  1. Stop posting for a few days. Nothing you publish while the account is limited will perform, and each post adds another thing to audit.
  2. Audit the last thirty posts and their comment threads against the wording rules for your markets. Delete or edit what fails, rather than reposting it.
  3. Rebuild the hashtag pool from scratch instead of pruning the old one.
  4. Check the account for old violations in the account status section, and appeal the ones that are wrong.
  5. Resume with a lower volume and a mix that is mostly educational for two or three weeks.

Recovery is measured in weeks, not days, and there is no request that speeds it up. What shortens it is removing the cause rather than waiting the symptom out.

Prevention is cheaper

Every item on the cause list is checkable before publication. That is the entire argument for running captions and tags through a check as part of production rather than as an occasional audit: the cost of the check is seconds, and the cost of the penalty is weeks of reach.

Questions

Does Instagram confirm shadowbans exist?
Meta does not use the word. It does document that accounts can stop being eligible for recommendation when content does not meet its recommendation guidelines, which produces the effect people describe.
How long does a reach drop last?
There is no fixed period, and appeals do not apply to something that was never an explicit action. In practice accounts recover over weeks once the cause is removed.
Will deleting old posts help?
Deleting posts that break the wording rules is worth doing. Deleting healthy posts is not, and mass deletion removes the history that made the account credible.
